History
In 1921, after the Uvalde & Northern Railway was finished between Uvalde and Camp Wood, and the town of Camp Wood was properly laid out, the Camp Wood Baptist Church was organized and started. It later became First Baptist Church of Camp Wood when it incorporated in 1973. The charter members met in the auditorium of the school. The church met in a building in 1935 on property that is now the tennis courts at Nueces Canyon Elementary School.
In 1936, the church built a new building to better serve the needs of the congregation. This building still stands at the intersection of Third and San Antonio Streets.
Today, the First Baptist Church is the first building one sees when entering Camp Wood from Uvalde and Montell. This worship center was dedicated November 7, 1976.
In 1996, during its 75th Anniversary, the Family Life Center was dedicated. This facility includes a gymnasium, dining/conference/fellowship hall, kitchen, library, and numerous classrooms.
